Mesotopos
Location Climate History Activities Occupation Photos Videos Mesotopos is located in the western part of Lesvos and is built on the slopes of bare volcanic hills. It is only 78Km away from Mytilene and a few kilometers from Eresos with the picturesque port of Tavari and the golden beaches of Chrousso and Podara. It is a traditional village with narrow streets and houses with tiled roofs. Ancient finds are found in various parts of the area, which attest to a strong presence from prehistoric times. There are two churches in Mesotopos village – Agios Dimitrios (1720) and the Virgin Mary (1756). The carnival of Mesotopos is a hugely important event in the cultural life of the village. On ‘Cheese-Fare Sunday’ before the coming of Lent, visitors, and locals gather in Mesotopos to join in the celebrations and watch the ‘Koudounati’ (men dressed in animal skins and old copper bells) dance in the village streets. The Agrotouristic Cooperative of the Women of Mesotopos was established in 1998 and rapidly evolved into a modern production unit preparing and selling a variety of traditional products. Mesotopos is a village of farmers and fishermen but has recently begun being promoted as a holiday destination particularly suitable for ecotourism and agrotourism. District Properties
